01-DEC-25 - FOSTER - 12/01/25 17:02 Foster note: Queso is as lovable as ever. His favorite past time is, without a doubt, napping. While I work, he’s my sleepy assistant posted up on his bed in the background of my zoom calls. When I’m not working, he’s either snoozing on the couch or laying in the hallway that intersects the kitchen, office and living room— keeping an eye on us as we move about! Even though this sweet old guy is slowing down a bit more with each passing day, he’s always excited for a short, slow walk through the neighborhood in the mornings. At night, he enjoys snuggling up on the couch between my husband and me, allowing our other dogs to cuddle up with him too, especially with the cooler weather! He always enjoys a social visit with staff while getting a bath at our local Sit Stay Splash doggy wash. He’s a charmer!

04-MAY-25 - FOSTER - 05/04/25 11:30 Foster note: Queso is doing great, he is so calm, happy and gentle with a wagging tail and a big doggy smile on his face. He enjoys meeting people and has been great with my 3 dogs (10 - 60 pounds) and respects their space. He just goes with the flow and loves to cuddle up with a person on the couch or on our bed.

25-MAR-25 - FOSTER - 03/25/25 10:02 Foster note: Queso Fresco is doing amazing. After his short adoption, he came back out on foster with us. While it took him a couple days to settle back in, he's doing well being back at our house. He's back to going on his daily morning walks, taking lots of naps and even enjoying some play time with our resident dog and foster dog, Dusky. He's been really good with Dusky; he's a gentle giant who lets Dusky crawl all over him and cuddle up next to him to take naps. Dusky has even helped bring out more of Queso's personality, giving him a little extra pep in his step when Dusky gets his zoomies.

03-JAN-25 - FOSTER - 01/03/25 09:05 Foster Note: Queso is such a sweet boy with quite a personality. When he’s not napping on the couch or doggy bed, he’s following us around the house, seeking attention and all the love. He loves to let us know when he’s getting hungry for dinner, commonly woofing at us with his deep half-bark and eyes that would make anyone melt! He gets along splendidly with other dogs when we’ve ventured out to 2 recent PRC events. He loves meeting new people and doggies of the same activity level, but does get worn out pretty quickly, especially when he goes from laying down to standing frequently. He enjoys slow, short, daily walks around the block, and when the weather is nice enough to have the patio door open, we commonly find him outside on the couch sunbathing! He does have occasional accidents in the house, so we try to make sure he goes out every couple hours and as soon as he wakes. Queso is such an adorable senior with a personality who deserves a wonderful loving home for him to live out the rest of his days!

25-OCT-24 - FOSTER - 10/25/24 14:30 Foster Note: Queso is still doing amazing and has settled in nicely. He’s showing more personality and pep in his step, even trotting a bit during our morning walks and engaging in some mild playfulness during the day, although he does still nap quite a bit! He’s also our shadow, always following us room to room. Such a sweet boy, who absolutely loves to cuddle up on the couch!

11-SEP-24 - FOSTER - 09/11/24 12:10 Foster Note: Queso's first day with us has been good, albeit physically & mentally stressful on him getting into and out of the car, then acclimating to a new environment. He spent most of the day/night pacing throughout the house. He wasn't interested in eating dinner at first, but had a pretty good appetite in the morning after picking up some Fresh Pet (he doesn't seem to be a fan of the kibble we offered him). After arriving home, he seemed overly exerted (lots of panting and uneasiness) and it took him until about midnight to finally find a comfortable place and position to sleep in. He's had several accidents in the house (pee only) even though we're taking him out consistently, but realize it'll take some time for him to learn where to go and how to tell us he needs to potty. We went for a very short walk, making sure we went at his pace, and he did well! He's enjoying LOTS of belly rubs and general affection. He's getting along super well with our resident dog too! Hopefully, Queso adjusts even more over the days to come and can rest even easier!

22-MAY-23 - FOSTER - 05/22/23 09:55 Queso is a sweet boy who loves to love!! I set up his bed at mine and started to work at my computer- when Queso comes over puts his paw on me. I gave him some pets and walked him back over to his orthopedic foam dog bed. This sweet boy walks over to me again and lays on the hard tile to be close and touch me. He has a big heart and is patient. No food aggression. I recommend giving him a bowl of food immediately when home- it will instantly build his trust bond with you!! He is not potty trained but when you tell him no- he feels very guilty! I advise to be gentle in your training voice with him. I think he was potty trained at one time and lived in a home: but he is older now and I think has to pee more frequently than a younger dog. He loves to curl up and cuddle.he enjoys treats but affection and praise is his favorite. Also- he is photogenic!! I swear he posed when I took his pics, even crosses his from paws when lying down. I advise a hard no for stairs. He can down them but difficult going up- I would carry him. “No stairs please. I think he would do well with another older calm dog that will not jump on him. He was very interested in other dogs walking by and non reactive. He walks on a leash well but just gotta steer him- he usually wants to keep walking!! Queso is a sweet boy who’s hard to let go, he wants nothing else but love/affection and a friend. When you walk up to him the kennel, he will immediately walk and greet you

16-MAY-23 - INTERACT - 05/16/23 18:16 Volunteer Note: Queso Fresco is such a nice, easygoing gentleman. He walks great on the leash, with no reactivity toward other dogs. Once in the yard, he stayed very close and continued to give me his paw for more attention. His eyes are beautiful to look at, and he seems very smart. He just wants a person to hang out with.

09-MAY-23 - INTERACT - Per volunteer: A2297664 Queso Fresco was easy to leash and a fairly slow walker. He was happy to see me and wagged his tail throughout the walk. He really wanted to go to the play area, but this time we were just out for a walk. He was very easy to walk back and put him in his kennel.

14-APR-23 - MEDICAL - MEDICAL WAIVER: DENTAL DISEASE, WITHOUT DENTAL What is the medical issue? This patient had moderate to severe dental disease when it arrived at the shelter. What has PRC done so far? This pet's dental disease was graded on a scale of 0-4 out of 4, in accordance with the American Dental Veterinary College. This pet was started on any necessary medications (pain medications, antibiotics, etc.) and scheduled for canned food, if needed. Due to the limited resources and personnel at PRC, a dental was not performed prior to adoption. What can the adopter expect? Your new pet will likely need a dental procedure in the next 6 months. Please talk to your primary veterinarian about the costs associated with dental prophylaxis in your pet. This animal will likely need regular dental procedures for the rest of their life. Most pets with dental disease should have routine cleanings that may include tooth extractions every 6 months to 2 years. Comments: Dental disease in cats and dogs is one of the most common health problems seen as a pet ages. Severe dental disease can result in general discomfort as well as pain when an animal eats. Dental disease is also a nidus for infection. Adopter understands they are adopting this animal "as is" and are responsible for future medical care. *Note: Any memo with MEDICAL WAIVER heading is provided as standardized information about said medical issue. Memo may be edited to reflect individualized patient as needed*

14-APR-23 - MEDICAL - HEARTWORM POSITIVE (TEMPLATE) What is the medical issue? This dog was diagnosed with Heartworm disease at the shelter. Heartworm disease is caused by large worms that live in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels, causing lung disease, heart failure, and other organ damage. What has PRC done so far? This dog has begun treatment for this disease. A 30 day course of doxycycline will be completed, followed by a 30 day 'rest' period. If this dog has not completed meds prior to adoption, you should receive a prescription to fill at a pharmacy to obtain remaining doses. Two months after diagnosis, if healthy enough for treatment as determined by PRC veterinarians, your dog can receive injections to kill adult heartworms at the PRC. This injection is a medication called "Diroban" which is injected into the large muscles of the back. Two injections are given 24 hours apart, per FDA guidelines. This protocol kills about 90% of heartworms and is recommended for stage 1 and 2 heartworm disease. Alternatively, adopters can elect to pursue heartworm treatment with their veterinarian. Your veterinarian may recommend additional diagnostics prior to treatment, or may recommend a slightly different protocol. What can the adopter expect? This dog should receive heartworm prevention monthly year-round for the rest of the its life to prevent another infection. Next month's dose of prevention will be dispensed; you must follow up with your vet for continued prevention. Your pet should be retested 6 months after treatment for heartworm disease, and then yearly thereafter. Your vet may recommend additional diagnostics or treatments. All further care is the responsibility of the adopter. Comments: Heartworm treatment is not benign. Some pets may have adverse reactions to heartworm treatment, including swelling at the injection site, pain, and respiratory issues. In rare cases the dying worms in the bloodstream might fall apart and cause a thrombus (blockage of a blood vessel). If this happens your pet might have respiratory distress and could die. Any activities that cause panting or elevated heart rate can increase the risk of a thrombus. It is critical that your pet is crate rested for 6 weeks following treatment and is only allowed to go outside for short periods of time on a leash to urinate/defecate. A medical staff member will go over any questions you may have at discharge.
