24-MAR-26 - INTERACT - 03/24/26 15:13 Before the PRC dog came to the yard, behavior team went over the play group tools and their purpose and how the session will be conducted. During the dog-to-dog meet and greet the behavior team has covered the following topics: Item 1, keep the dogs separated during the decompression and acclimation time. Item 2, keep the dogs separated when feeding either by using separate rooms, crates or even baby fences (dogs might hopped over the baby fence), adopters can exchange scents of dogs or other animals to keep the introduction and acclimation moving forward. Item 3, keep the dogs separated when there are toys out. Play time with toys should be between the adopter and newly adopted dog from PRC until the adopter gets to know the new dog in the house. Item 4, Make sure to keep the interactions between the dogs outside in the backyards or neutral territory free from any treats, food or affection. The interactions between dogs can be short but they always have to end on a good note. Item 5, The behavior team told the adopters to take everything very slowly and give the new dog in the house time to decompress and acclimate. All interactions must be supervised between dogs and/or new people. Chase met with a neutered french bulldog, both dogs greeted calmly at fence and likewise remaind calm while in play yard together. Dog's greeted but citizens' dog was more focused on his owners outside of the yard, but did not react poorly to Chase coming over to him. Once citizens (two adults) re-entered the yard, both dogs still engaged calmly and greeted everyone. Dogs never fully engaged in play but both had relaxed bodies throughout. -DJ

23-MAR-26 - INTERACT - 03/19/26 Chase was initially avoidant of leash when I entered his kennel. I started offering him treats holding them through the leash, which he took then retreated. After 3-4 treats he would place his head through the leash on his own and stay there waiting for another. After a few more times of this, I closed the leash and Chase walked to kennel front with loose body posture waiting to exit. He walked with a mild pull for the duration of the walk. He ignored other dogs and cats on the walk, solicited affection from me and from passing known staff member. He was returned to kennel without issue. -NMS

18-MAR-26 - EUTHANASIA - 03/18/26 13:52 ** final plea COB 3/25/26. not foster nor pawdition eligible ** Requesting final plea for Chase due to in-kennel behavior and quality of life at the shelter. Chase struggles a lot with handling in the kennel. He was a staff project pet, and also went out to foster. In foster, Chase did well. However, back in the shelter, Chase is very uncomfortable and defensive anytime anybody tries to get him out of the kennel, barking, growling, avoidant. The behavior team put Chase through the project dog program where Chase improved a little bit, but still struggling with handling. Chase has been reactive to staff and volunteers at the shelter, barking, snarling while showing teeth. He is experiencing very high levels of kennel stress, fear and anxiety. He is very avoidant of the leash in the kennel. Out of the kennel, Chase does well, seeks attention and allows all petting. Chase can be a bit shy at first. From what has been observed at the shelter, Chase is social with other dogs. Chase may get overwhelmed with dogs who are high energy or big groups. PRC is not the proper environment for Chase. If there is no commitment by deadline COB 3/25/26, humane euthanasia will be authorized.

18-MAR-26 - INTERACT - 03/16/26 Chase approached the kennel door with soft body. When I attempted to leash he backed up and barked. When I lowered the leash he would approached me again. Chase took treats from me gently but would only approach if I lowered my leash. Eventually able to leash him while taking a treat but he attempted to back out as soon as he felt the pressure. He walked with a moderate pull to the yard. Leashed were swapped easily in the yard. He played with toys, sat for treats which he took gently, and solicited affection accepting all over body pets. Leashes were easily swapped for return but he did cower his head while I put slip over him. He had a mild pull on the walk back and was unleashed at kennel with clip to slip. -NMS

17-MAR-26 - BEHAVIOR - 03/17/26 17:39 Behavior team and shelter staff have been working with Chase to improve his quality of life since arriving at the shelter. Chase struggles a lot with handling in the kennel. Chase was a project pet for that reason and has gotten out to foster. In the kennel, Chase is very uncomfortable and defensive, barking, growling. Chase does well out of the kennel and when he is out in foster. However, in-kennel behavior persists which hinders his quality of life. Staff and volunteers have a hard time getting Chase out and sometimes he does not even get out due to the behaviors in the kennel since he makes staff and volunteers uncomfortable.

16-MAR-26 - INTERACT - 03/12/26 Per volunteer: I tried to leash Chase from both the inside and outside kennels with no luck. Chase was very treat motivated and would approach every time I offered a treat however he would dart away from the leash whenever it was near. He was barking the entire time I was trying to leash him. I would step pretty far into his inside kennel to make a couple attempts, but again he would duck away from me, barking, but not in a way I felt was aggressive. I was not successful leashing him today.

10-MAR-26 - OBSERVED - 03/10/26 16:16 Today around 11:00 AM I went to go get a dog from a kennel near Chase. As I passed by Chase with my leash, he ran at the kennel door barking and snarling with teeth bared. Later in the afternoon around 2:15 PM on wellness rounds with two other staff members, he did not approach the fence at first but did stiffen his body language. An interaction was attempted by calling his name and encouraging noises, and then he began lunging at the gate. JER

09-MAR-26 - INTERACT - 03/09/26 16:17 When staff approached Chase's kennel, he was standing outside by the gate. When the staff member opened the gate and had the clip leash in their hand, Chase was barking and backed away. The staff member threw treats to get Chase to come closer but he would quickly pick up the treat and back away. The staff member showed Chase the slip leash and he continued to do the same thing. The staff member went inside and closed the door to keep Chase there. He continued to avoid the leash even while eating treats. It took a few minutes before the staff member was able to leash Chase and he walked to the yard with a moderate pull. Once there, he walked around on his own and occasionally came over to the staff member. He wasn't interested in toys or treats. He solicited attention briefly and accepted pets on his back. He walked back to his kennel with a moderate pull and was easily returned. The staff member was able to remove the slip leash by hand. -DW

06-MAR-26 - INTERACT - 3/5/26 Per volunteer: Chase was shut in his inside kennel due to cleaning. He gently accepted a treat. When I introduced the slip lead, he cowered and backed up. I tossed in a treat, and entered his kennel, where he stood barking and avoidant. I offered another treat, and he came closer to me and allowed leashing. Once out of his kennel, he immediately ran to the other kenneled dogs, but did not react to them. Walking to the isolation yard, he had a loose relaxed body posture, stopping along the way to sniff. In the yard, he ran on his own and had no interest in playing with the toys. I sat down on the bench, he came to me and allowed me to pet him all over. He was returned and easily unleashed.
