24-SEP-25 - INTERACT - 09/24/25 16:25 - Ruger met staff at kennel door bounding out from inside space of kennel, excitedly wagging his tail. He stood at the gate while it was unlocked and allowed staff to leash him easily. He strongly pulled staff along to play yard, where he immediately lay on his back in a sunny area of the grass and rolled around joyfully. Ruger alternated between that and soliciting pets from staff throughout the interaction, allowing all handling. On return to kennel, Ruger was leash wrapped to reduce pulling, once back in kennel, he released easily. -GB

23-SEP-25 - INTERACT - 9/22/25 Per volunteer: Ruger was easy to leash and went to the garden with a strong pull. He rolled on his back on the way and several times again after entering the garden. No interest in toys or pets. Walked a couple of laps around the perimeter by my side. He was easy to leash and returned to the kennel still with a strong pull. Used harness wrap both ways.

19-SEP-25 - INTERACT - 09/19/25 12:46 - Ruger met staff at gate with loose body and wagging tail, jumping up on gate as staff unlocked it. He ducked the leash on first attempt, but was otherwise easy to leash and walked to yard with a strong pull. Once in the yard, Ruger showed no interest in playing with either balls or squeeky toys, instead soliciting pets from staff often while in yard. He would follow staff and volunteers walking outside play yard, happily wagging his tail and occasionally barking for attention from them, returning to staff in yard after for more pets. Ruger did avoid contact around his head by turning away from staff, but had no issues with tail or paw holding. He was easily leashed in yard and walked to kennel with a strong pull. - GB

05-SEP-25 - INTERACT - 04/18/25 16:54 Ruger approached handler with loose body and wagging neutral tail. Ruger was easy to leash, allowed over his head with no problem. Ruger had a hard pull upon exiting the kennel, but eased up to moderate pull during the walk to the yard. Was not reactive to other dogs in kennel, but was pulling forward the entire way. Easy to lead through gates to yard. In the yard Ruger explored in a leisurely fashion and was not interested in handlers until treats were provided. He ran around in short spurts occasionally when prompted by handlers, and was playful jumping around and running circles around handler that provided treats. Majority of yard time was spent soliciting attention and affection from handler that initially provided treats. No toys in yard at this time. Knows sit and paw commands. Upon handler removing leash and approaching Ruger, he initially did a lap around the yard away from the handler. Ruger was able to be leashed easily with a treat provided. -LR/KR-

27-AUG-25 - INTERACT - 08/27/25 10:35 Ruger was in his outer kennel constantly barking at staff when staff was nearby. When staff approached his door, he had loose body and wagging tail. Ruger was easy to leash. Ruger has a strong pull and staff used the leash to craft a makeshift harness. In the yard, Ruger continuously roamed the perimeter looking for an exit. He was aloof for the majority of the interaction. Ruger appears to understand sit and paw. He is gentle with treats. Ruger refused to return to his kennel and even pancaked right outside his door. Staff had to lift and place him in his kennel. -KR-

13-JUL-25 - FOSTER - 07/13/25 13:09 Foster note: Ruger has been Amazing. His doggie IQ must be off the chart. He knows "sit", "paw", "down", and "up", I think it's called, where he stands on his hind legs and gently sets his paws on my arm in front of me. Right after we left PRC we hit the pet store. He was so relaxed and chill. He never reacted to any kittens or other dogs. He did pick up a bone as soon as he saw one, laid down, and started chewing. It was SO precious. We took a trip to Safety Harbor where we walked around and sat down for lunch. He was definitely comfortable riding in a car. Although Ruger Really Loves treats, he never begged or jumped up for food. On the way back he fell asleep in my lap. He also had a bath. I know Ruger wasn't about it at first, but he never acted out. It took about 15 minutes for him to chill and then he sat down and leaned against me as I scrubbed him. Now he sleeps in bed with me. Inside he is the most chill dog I've seen in a while. He loves to lay in the kitchen. During dinner he just lays by the table but no begging. When Ruger and I go for walks he's remarkably good. He doesn't pull toward people, other dogs, and even cats. He alway flops down for back scratches multiple times during walks. You can tell he's in heaven. I can't help but laugh. The only thing that he loves to chase is lizards. It's hilarious. He's also spent some time with my neighbors Chihuahua and Ruger seems to have found his best friend. Inside our home he likes to lay on the soft rugs, when he's not right next to me which is most of the time. Except for belly rubs, he love's all kinds of pets and attention, especially scratches above his tail.

09-JUL-25 - FOSTER - 07/09/25 13:34 Adventure Tail: Ruger is very sweet, smart, and strong. When I picked up Ruger we went for a short walk in the parking lot where he plopped down and rolled for about 5 minutes. After that, we went to Starbucks and got him a Pup Cup. He ate it with as much grace as a dog could. He has very good car manners. He allowed me to help him stay sturdy when going around turns. Next, we went to Lettuce Lake Park. Ruger never responded to distractions such as people or other dogs. He knows sit, paw, and down. Ruger walked with a minimum pull for the most part. Finally, we did a home visit. As I was walking around the yard, he saw 2 deer lawn ornaments that he pulled hard toward it which caught me off guard. Ruger sniffed around slowly while greeting a few people. He was very relaxed and calm. I think at one point he fell asleep while on the rug. He rode most of the journey back to PRC with his head resting in my arms and his body leaning on my lap. He's a big sweetheart. I'd say his favorite part of the day would be going home. He just relaxed in the living room or on the porch. He was definitely in the kitchen when I was. Even though Ruger is extremely motivated he never begged or jumped on the counters and never jumped on any furniture. Ruger was a gentleman with the biggest smile all day long.

22-JUN-25 - INTERACT - 06/20/25 Per volunteer: I was able to leash Ruger without any issues. He had a strong pull once he was leashed but was not reactive to the dogs he passed. We took a very fast paced walk to the Sensory Garden. He immediately plopped down and rolled in the grass for the first 5 to 7 minutes. He allowed me to pet him all over and we took a stroll around the parking lot. I didn't have any issues returning him to his kennel.

19-MAY-25 - MEDICAL - MEDICAL WAIVER: KCS What is the medical issue? This patient was diagnosed with "dry eye" or keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) at the shelter. This is a condition where the eye does not produce appropriate tears to keep it lubricated. Over time, this can cause damage to the patient’s cornea. What has PRC done so far? KCS has been diagnosed by measuring tear production and evaluating for corneal ulcers. This patient has been started on a medication called Optimmune (cyclosporine 1% optic) or Tacrolimus to treat this disease. This patient may also be receiving an antibiotic eye medication to treat an existing infection. What can the adopter expect? Most dogs diagnosed with dry eye have this condition for the rest of their life. Eye medication needs to be given daily. Please talk to your veterinarian before adoption about the cost of the medication and associated vet visits to manage this condition. Once managed, patients can be very comfortable. Comments: The consequences of untreated KCS are very painful eyes, ulcer formation, inflammation, and decreased vision. This pet will most likely require eye medications for the rest of their life. Unfortunately, some patients become difficult to medicate over time. All future care is the responsibility of the adopter. *Note: Any memo with MEDICAL WAIVER heading is provided as standardized information about said medical issue. Memo may be edited to reflect individualized patient as needed*
