15-DEC-25 - MEDICAL - HEARTWORM TREATED (TEMPLATE) What is the medical issue? This dog was diagnosed with Heartworm disease by a tabletop veterinary test that detects parts of the heartworms in the bloodstream. Heartworm disease is caused by large worms that live in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels, causing lung disease, heart failure, and other organ damage. What has PRC done so far? This dog was treated for this disease using a medication called "Diroban" that is injected into the large muscles of the back in order to kill the adult heartworms. Two injections were given 24 hours apart, according to FDA guidelines. This protocol kills about 90% of heartworms and is recommended for stage one and two heartworm disease. What can the adopter expect? This dog should receive heartworm prevention monthly year-round for the rest of the patient's life to prevent another heartworm infection. Next month's dose of prevention will be dispensed; you must follow up with your veterinarian for continued prevention. Your pet should be retested six months after treatment for heartworm disease, and then yearly thereafter. Your veterinarian may recommend additional diagnostics. Your veterinarian may recommend additional treatments. All further care is the responsibility of the adopter. Comments: Heartworm treatment is not benign. Some pets may have adverse reactions to heartworm treatment, including swelling at the injection site, pain, and respiratory issues. In rare cases the dying worms in the bloodstream might fall apart and cause a "thrombus" which is a blockage of a blood vessel. If this happens your pet might have respiratory distress and could die. Any activities that cause panting or increased heart rate can increase the risk of a thrombus. It is critical that your new pet is crate rested for 6 weeks following treatment and is only allowed to go outside for short periods of time on a leash to urinate and defecate. A medical staff member will go over any questions you may have at discharge.

29-NOV-25 - FOSTER - 11/29/25 14:31 - Foster Feedback Betty was very quiet and clingy all day, but she was sweet!t She was good and ate all her dinner. We took a walk and she was very well behaved. All day though, and night, she followed me everywhere. I have a small house, and if i got up to go to the kitchen she followed me. My backyard came in handy for her to run out to go potty. she was a good girl and slept on a blanket by my bed all night. The second day she was much more outgoing, getting rambunctious off and on durin the day. We took two walks plus i let her go into the backyard, where she played like a puppy, bounding side to side. She loves milkbone. She is very good about going outside, though the first day she started digging in my yard but i think I said no gently and that persuaded her to stop. She does seem very very interested in other dogs, very friendly and may have made a friend in one dog we passed durng the walk. MC

17-NOV-25 - INTERACT - 11/17/25 10:29 Per volunteer: Betty presents as a calm and quiet companion. She exited her kennel easily and showed no reaction toward other dogs on her walk to the yard. Once outside, she proved to be an affectionate dog who also enjoys running after toys. She adored belly rubs and affection. She happily walked back to her kennel with her tail wagging.

14-NOV-25 - INTERACT - 11/14/25 16:37 - Betty met staff at kennel gate with loose body and wagging tail, standing as gate was unlocked to allow for easy leashing. She walked out to the play yard with little to no pull, and once released into yard, walked around sniffing happily on her own for a few minutes. Once satisfied with the smells of the yard, Betty came back to staff and rubbed up against his leg soliciting pets, allowing them all over, and rolled onto her back for belly rubs. She excitedly played with stuffed squeeker toys and chased down a thrown rubber ball, returning with it once. When highly stimulated from play with the stuffy, Betty did get somewhat mouthy, aiming towards staff's hand rather than the toy a couple times, making contact with a somewhat soft mouth, and correcting quickly with "ah, ah" or "no" from staff, even rolling on her back in apology and allowing belly rubs again. Staff sat on bench and Betty joined, sitting between his knees while being pet, leaning against his leg affectionately. After a few minutes of calm pets, Betty leashed easily in the yard and walked back to her kennel with no pulling, standing to unleash easily. - GB

27-OCT-25 - FOSTER - 10/27/25 15:00 Foster note: If I were only given one word to describe her, it would be: calm. She is a very calm, and sweet dog, who loooves to cuddle, and didn’t seem to have issues with anyone. She never pulled on the leash when we went on walks, she was friendly to everyone I introduced her to, and she didn’t go crazy when other dogs were passing by either. Betty was calm in the car, and she prefers to be in the backseat because then she can lay down while I was driving. She showed no problems going on the elevators either. She is house trained, and when I went to gym or school I came back to no mess in the apartment. Also, she laid down and slept through most of the time I wasn’t actively playing or walking her. So Betty is a very easy going dog, that doesn’t demand a lot of energy; but will give you a lot of love when you ask her to sit by your side ( she snuggles, and falls asleep). That is: she is incredibly calm, and sweet. I absolutely loved her!
