18-FEB-26 - INTERACT - 02/15/26 10:51 Per Volunteer: Brett tried to push his way out of the kennel once leashed, but did not bite the leash. The toys were removed from the yard as suggested by the sign on his kennel. Inside the yard, Brett was fixated on treats. He was sniffing at the treat bag and sometimes jumping at me. He could be momentarily distracted by affection, which he accepted in all spots with no issue. On return to his kennel, my clip-the-slip technique was not the greatest, but Brett allowed me to reach in and remove the leash without issue.

17-FEB-26 - INTERACT - 02/10/26 15:51 Brett was pacing in feces and barking at kennel front when staff approached. Additional staff member was calling him inside to clean exterior kennel, so I moved to the inside to leash. From the interior kennel Brett was easy to leash and walked with an extremely heavy pull to the yard. For the majority of the time in the yard he explored on his own. He came to me when offered treats, which he took roughly to begin with then got more gentle over time. He allowed petting but would typically walk away once I stopped petting him, a few times he did lean in soliciting further affection. He was easily called over to leash and returned without issue.

16-FEB-26 - INTERACT - 2/7/26 Per volunteer: Brett was jumping at his kennel door when I was unlocking it, but stopped to allow leashing. He pulled toward the neighboring kennel at first, but I steered him away. He pulled moderately hard on the way to the scent garden. After exploring, Brett jumped up on my chair and got close for some affection which he allowed all over. He spent most of his time grabbing various stuffed toys and laying down in my vicinity with them. At one point he brought one over and laid down in my lap with it. Brett ignored other dogs on the way back to his kennel and still had a moderate pull. He was easy to return and unleash.

11-FEB-26 - EUTHANASIA - 02/11/26 13:17 02/11/26 **Final plea, COB 2/18/26. Not foster eligible.** Brett is routinely showing high levels of FAS seen in the shelter of barking and jumping in kennel, at times leash biting. Brett has gone to playgroup while at the shelter and been assessed as dog selective due to him protesting other dogs corrections leading to reactivity and being uninterruptible when handlers step in to move him away from other dogs. Brett has gone to foster and did well with housebreaking and being crated at night. His foster noted he was more destressed when crated during the day when they were away for longer periods. Also while in foster Brett was noted to develop resource guarding of food and toys. Brett has been on behavior medications at the shelter and foster home but his behaviors persist. PRC has exhausted their resources with Brett and he will continue to decline as he stays at the shelter. If there is no commitment by COB 2/18/26, humane euthanasia will be authorized.

05-FEB-26 - INTERACT - 02/05/26 14:48 Brett was jumping in the kennel when staff approached. He was easy to leash and he had a moderate pull to the yard. In the yard, Brett ran around and chased a rubber ball. He approached staff and leaned on them for pets. He allowed all petting. He was interested in the dog in the neighboring yard, but it was easy to redirect him by calling him or throwing a toy. There were no issues returning to the kennel. - NS

04-FEB-26 - FOSTER - 02/04/26 10:16 - foster feedback - We have loved the past week with Brett and getting to know his sweet personality. He has separation anxiety, even with medication, and crate training is proving promising but still initially difficult for him. He barks constantly when left alone and seems to be getting slightly worse with longer durations. He is a very happy and relatively easy dog outside of crate training, but we have been keeping him separate from our other dogs since initial reactions after a few days to decompression seemed too high in nervous energy. He does sleep through the night in the crate without barking, it just seems to be stressing him out more during the day. We have discovered he walks great on a leash, has minimal reaction but slight pull towards birds/cats/squirrels, and that having a toy to hold helps him redirect his initial excitement when greeting new people or ourselves when we return home. He has begun resource guarding at random times. We noticed first when reaching to readjust his food bowl that he snapped (no contact, just warning) and began guarding his food. Since then, we have practiced exchanging for high value items, and most of the time he is fine, but certain times he can become agitated. He then started doing the same with toys, which as mentioned previously were used as a tool. Exchanging for other toys does work but be gets very excited for the next toy and jumps and snaps for the toy, which is not the calm reaction we are hoping to train. I do think it's a very mild case of resource guarding, no doubt stemming from his separation anxiety and previous trauma. I think with a little work and caution, this can be trained fairly easily. Since staying with us, he has improved on "sit" and "wait" commands, taking treats gently, learning the word "no", calmness in the house, potty training, and greetings with new people. He is a really sweet and cute dog, but in order for him to find true success I don't think a home with other animals or small kids would be ideal, and someone needs to have the time to train him with commitment to help with his house manners, separation anxiety, and resource guarding. I know he can make someone very happy, we just want to give him a better opportunity to succeed. mc

28-JAN-26 - INTERACT - 1/22/26 Per volunteer: Brett was leashed low after giving a treat. He walked away from dogs with a moderate pull to the yard. He ran to pick up a toy, playfully running the yard and splashing in the kiddie pool, pushing the toy around with his nose. We played fetch with all of the toys. He carried a toy to the garden; then dropped it to explore and play among the plants, get pets and sit for treats. He then played with his toy for a while; including in the pool. He walked well on a walk in the lot and going back to his kennel, reacting to a reactive barking dog; then stopping for a pet from a father and child.

23-JAN-26 - INTERACT - 01/23/26 15:24 - Brett met staff at kennel gate with loose body and wagging tail, jumping up as staff unlocked gate. He did mouth at leash as it was placed over his head, but let go of it immediately and after resetting, stood for easy leashing. Brett walked out to the yard with a moderate pull. Once in the yard Brett found a squeaker toy and began playing with it, staff grabbed up another squeaker and he jumped at the toy, grabbing it in the air. After growing tired, Brett came over to staff, laying down and allowing pets all over. He then climbed into staff's lap and solicited more pets, all while carrying the toy in his mouth. After some more time around the yard, Brett ran into the catch pen when called and leashed easily, still carrying a toy. He walked back with heavy pull, unleashing easily. -GB

22-JAN-26 - INTERACT - 01/21/26 10:38 Brett was pacing at the exterior kennel gate when approached by staff. He was an easy leash and walked with a mild pull. He was reactive to his kennel neighbor when first coming out but no other kennels we passed. Once Brett got to the yard he immediately just wanted to play with toys. He chased toys thrown and would bring them back to staff to play keep away or drop it for some fetch. Came when called and allowed pets all over. Climbed up into staffs lap for more attention. Brett knew how to sit for treats which he accepted gently. He spent the remainder of his time in the yard playing with toys. Easy to kennel. - AH
