13-MAY-26 - Behavior - 05/13/26 17:21 Yona was placed on evaluation behavior due to having behavior issues when coming to the shelter and had to control pole. At the beginning Yona was nervous and evasive of handling. At this point, Yona has allowed handling and petting from staff, volunteers and the behavior team. Yona is not evasive in the kennel anymore; she still displays some barking when people approach her kennel. Yona solicited attention from the handler in the yard. Moving off OBS.

13-MAY-26 - Interact - Yona met Staff at the outside kennel door with a low wagging tail. Staff offered a treat that was accepted by Yona but not eaten. Yona was easily leashed and wagged her tail in the process. She walked well to the yard without issue and relieved herself once she entered. She approached Staff and allowed pets on her head, ears, and lower back. She brought a ball over to Staff and played a couple of rounds of fetch before seeking out more pets. Once it was time to return to the kennel, she barked at a citizen who turned the corner quickly but was able to walk afterwards without any further issues. She was easily unleashed. JB 5/13/2026

12-MAY-26 - Medical - MEDICAL WAIVER: HEARTWORM POSITIVE What is the medical issue? This dog tested positive for heartworm while at PRC. Heartworm disease is caused by large worms that live in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels, causing lung disease, heart failure, and other organ damage. Heartworms are transmitted from mosquito bites after a mosquito has bitten an infected dog. What has PRC done so far? This dog has begun treatment for this disease. A 30-day course of doxycycline is completed, followed by a 30-day 'rest' period. If this dog has not completed meds prior to adoption, you should be provided with the remainder of the doxycycline course to go home. Two months after diagnosis, if healthy enough for treatment as determined by PRC veterinarians, your dog will have an appointment scheduled for the injections that kill adult heartworms. This injection is a medication called "Diroban" (melarsomine) which is injected into the large muscles of the back. Two injections are given 24 hours apart, per FDA guidelines. This protocol kills about 90% of heartworms and is recommended for stage 1 and 2 heartworm disease. Alternatively, adopters may elect to pursue heartworm treatment with their primary veterinarian. Your veterinarian may recommend additional diagnostics prior to treatment or may recommend a slightly different protocol. What can the adopter expect? This dog should be given heartworm prevention monthly year-round for the rest of their life to prevent re- infection. Next month's dose of prevention will be dispensed; you must follow up with your vet for continued prevention. Your pet should be retested 6 months after treatment for heartworm disease, and then yearly thereafter. All further care is the responsibility of the adopter. Comments: Heartworm treatment is not benign. Some pets may have adverse reactions to heartworm treatment, including swelling at the injection site, pain, and respiratory issues. In rare cases the dying worms in the bloodstream may fall apart and cause a thrombus (blockage of a blood vessel). If this happens, your pet may have respiratory distress and could die. Any activities that cause panting or elevated heart rate can increase the risk of a thrombus. It is critical that your pet is crate rested for 6-8 weeks following treatment and is only allowed to go outside for short periods of time on leash and harness to urinate/defecate.

08-MAY-26 - Interact - 05/08/26 14:33 Per volunteer: She was hesitant to be leashed and stayed back and away, barking. I moved to the inside, but she did the same but now on the inside kennel. I moved to the outside kennel one more time and stepped in a little bit further and coaxed her just by speaking to her, and eventually, she approached the leash and stood still while I leashed her and out she came. She walked well to the yard and ignored the other dogs. Once in the yard, she kept her distance at first to do some independent exploring. Eventually, I approached and sat down on one of the benches and she came over to me and allowed for all pets from head to tail. She warmed up over time. She was not interested in accepting any treats today. We moved to the garden where she enjoyed stepping into and swimming about into the pool. She moved around in the pool for several minutes and eventually came out. She didn't want to leave the garden when it was time so I approached her and just took up her lead and she trotted beside me as we left. She solicited for a few more pets back in the yard. She was easy to return to and unleash in her kennel.

06-MAY-26 - Behavior - 05/06/26 16:01 The dog was mid kennel, barking with low wag when approached. CR opened the door wide and she was quickly and easily leashed when she came forward. Similar interaction as previous time out and similar behavior with an unfamiliar staff member in the garden. She went in her kennel without issue and tried to dart out as the leash was removed. -CR

04-MAY-26 - Behavior - 05/04/26 16:50 The dog was at the door when approached and low wagged her tail but backed away from the leash then retreated inside and started barking. She was shut out and backed up while huffing but was able to be leashed after stepping in. She walked well on leash and leashes were swapped without issue. In the garden, she explored and got in the pond then approached CR for attention. She preferred petting on her rump but allowed petting on her head and back and had low wagging tail. She would not play with toys when CR engaged with them but played with stuffies on her own with time. She took high value treats gently and came when called for more petting. She followed CR to the gate and walked back well. She was hesistant entering the kennel until CR stepped in and she was easily unleashed while wagging her tail. -CR

03-MAY-26 - Behavior - 05/03/26 17:06 Pet was at gate when DJ approached, but started to bark and retreat when DJ stopped at her kennel. DJ tossed in treats, no interest. DJ unlocked kennel and showed leash, pet moved to inside of kennel. DJ went to inside of kennel and pet had gone to outside to eat treats left in kennel, DJ closed divider so pet was outside. On next leashing attempt, pet moved to back of kennel barking, DJ took a step inside the kennel and moved loop leash close enough for pet to sniff. Pet did not flinch away, just moved from side to side of kennel. DJ was able to loop leash over head and once secure pet walked out of kennel easily. Pet walked with calm gait to catch pen, allowed DJ to place and adjust collar. DJ placed an extra leash length before letting pet into yard. Once in yard, pet explored around perimeters, sniffing as she went. Pet had no interest in toys or treats. After a few minutes, DJ sat on step and a few minutes later pet walked by and licked hand in passing, no attempt to stay near for petting. A few more minutes passed and RM sat on bench, and pet soon walked over with a soft posture and nudged RMs hand for attention, stayed near for a few pets around head and shoulders, gradually leaning in for pets on rump before walking away. DJ moved over to bench and pet soon came over and sought attention from DJ and RM, allowing for pets head to tail. After this pet showed some interest in soft squeaky toy, picked up toy once tossed and carried around for for a moment before losing interest. Walking back to kennel, DJ placed clip to slip before exiting yard and pet walked with a calm pace back to kennel, walked into kennel without issue, leash was removed using clip to slip. -DJ
