07-SEP-25 - Foster - 09/07/25 14:07 Foster note: Midnight is doing fantastic with a new dog in the house, and they have already become best friends! Midnight is so comfortable with him that he even started trying to initiate some play! He did a couple of play bows and “chase me” signals. When Ken (A2474902) didn’t seem interested, Midnight just did a couple of laps around the yard and started playing with a toy when we came back inside. He hasn’t shown any signs of resource guarding either. He is fine sharing attention, dog beds, human beds, and couches with Ken. Ken isn’t interested in toys, but Midnight is fine with him sniffing and walking past his toys. Midnight is also very patient during treat time. Even though he’s very smart and already knows all the commands, Ken is still learning, so it takes some time for him to get his treats. Midnight patiently waits for his turn to show off.

04-SEP-25 - Medical - HEARTWORM POSITIVE (TEMPLATE) What is the medical issue? This dog was diagnosed with Heartworm disease at the shelter. Heartworm disease is caused by large worms that live in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels, causing lung disease, heart failure, and other organ damage. What has PRC done so far? This dog has begun treatment for this disease. A 30 day course of doxycycline will be completed, followed by a 30 day 'rest' period. If this dog has not completed meds prior to adoption, you should receive a prescription to fill at a pharmacy to obtain remaining doses. Two months after diagnosis, if healthy enough for treatment as determined by PRC veterinarians, your dog can receive injections to kill adult heartworms at the PRC. This injection is a medication called "Diroban" which is injected into the large muscles of the back. Two injections are given 24 hours apart, per FDA guidelines. This protocol kills about 90% of heartworms and is recommended for stage 1 and 2 heartworm disease. Alternatively, adopters can elect to pursue heartworm treatment with their veterinarian. Your veterinarian may recommend additional diagnostics prior to treatment, or may recommend a slightly different protocol. What can the adopter expect? This dog should receive heartworm prevention monthly year-round for the rest of the its life to prevent another infection. Next month's dose of prevention will be dispensed; you must follow up with your vet for continued prevention. Your pet should be retested 6 months after treatment for heartworm disease, and then yearly thereafter. Your vet may recommend additional diagnostics or treatments. All further care is the responsibility of the adopter. Comments: Heartworm treatment is not benign. Some pets may have adverse reactions to heartworm treatment, including swelling at the injection site, pain, and respiratory issues. In rare cases the dying worms in the bloodstream might fall apart and cause a thrombus (blockage of a blood vessel). If this happens your pet might have respiratory distress and could die. Any activities that cause panting or elevated heart rate can increase the risk of a thrombus. It is critical that your pet is crate rested for 6 weeks following treatment and is only allowed to go outside for short periods of time on a leash to urinate/defecate. A medical staff member will go over any questions you may have at discharge.

31-AUG-25 - Foster - 08/31/25 16:34 Foster note: Midnight is now sharing the house with a second foster dog. It’s only been 3 days, but he’s doing great! Ken A2474902 (2nd foster pup) is a very shy, timid, and laid-back senior. He’s only 31lbs but is actually a little taller than Midnight. They met through a baby gate, and Midnight politely sat, looking to me for direction. He is VERY food motivated now! Later, we took them for a walk together. In the beginning, Midnight was very excited to meet Ken and was pulling to get closer. After a few minutes, he stopped pulling as much and got to sniffing the grass and going potty. Then, after greeting each other in the backyard, Midnight’s curiosity was satisfied, and he was very focused on the treats in my pocket. The second day, they went out back for a few potty breaks together and later progressed to an hour-long nap session in the den together! Then, yesterday, a 3-hour nap session together! Midnight is doing great with sharing attention and also allowed Ken to nap in his bed. Midnight is really helping Ken to feel welcome and come out of his shell more.

19-AUG-25 - Foster - 08/19/25 12:31 Foster Note: Midnight is such an easy-going, happy boy! He spends most of the day napping or following me around the house. I call him my little helper. He’s satisfied with short walks and short indoor or outdoor fetch sessions. He’ll occasionally entertain himself with his toy bin too. He figured out that he's allowed to pull out toys on his own and helps himself now. The other day, he pulled out every single toy. It looked like a little kid having a tea party with their stuffed animals. He brought many of them to his bed with him for nap time. Since it’s been so hot out, his walks have been shorter and I started taking him for car rides with me. He’s great in the car and is learning what a “ride” is. When he gets really excited, he lets out a little howl that is absolutely adorable! He’s gotten the daily routine down too. He does his little howl when I go into the kitchen at breakfast and dinner time, walk to the front door with his leash at walk time, and ask him if he wants to go for a ride. He also seems to do it when he’s proud of his accomplishments, like learning how to go through the screen porch dog door. For the last potty outing of the night, he brings his favorite toy with him and when he’s all done and we’re walking back in, he runs through the back door and heads straight to bed with his toy.

05-AUG-25 - Foster - 08/05/25 15:58 Foster Note: Midnight is a smiley ray of sunshine! He’s always happy and has the most adorable smiles and head tilts. He can’t help but make you smile and brighten your day! He’s very friendly with everyone he meets. He loves pets and attention from people he meets while out and about on walks and car rides, and also people coming over to the house, even workmen walking in and out. He met my neighbor’s 20lb male dog on a walk and hung out with him in his backyard for a bit. He mostly ignored him and explored the new yard on his own, but would occasionally go sniff and greet him. He also sees my cat and foster kittens through baby gates and doesn’t seem bothered with them. He’ll occasionally look over at them but is very easy to redirect and mostly ignores them. He respects the baby gates and doesn’t jump or push on them. During walks, he completely ignores squirrels, birds, and even giant grasshoppers. He seems unbothered by small dogs barking at him, but does get nervous with bigger ones barking and creates more distance by moving to the grass or switching sides of me. He’s a smart pup and recently learned “paw” (handshake) and will also patiently wait in a “sit” while I open the front door, waiting for me to say “free”. He’s fine with me touching his toys, bones, and food.

21-JUL-25 - Foster - 07/21/25 10:06 Foster note: Midnight has continued to show what a well-behaved gentleman he is. I’ve left him home alone (free roaming) several times, and he just slept in his bed the whole time. He doesn’t even wake up to the door opening. I have to walk over to him and call his name for him to notice I came home. He’s very quiet and rarely barks. He doesn’t even react to the random, strange noises coming from my foster kittens’ room. Even though he loves his toys and carries them around the house and outside for potty breaks, he hasn’t destroyed a single one! He did start showing interest in getting on my bed at night, so I tried inviting him up again. He sleeps there for the first couple of hours each night, then jumps down to his bed. He still hasn’t shown any interest in getting on the couch. He is food motivated now and already knows ‘sit’ and ‘down’. We’ve also worked up to walking 1.25 miles each morning! He stopped his heavy pull at the beginning of walks and the first half of the walk is very slow with lots of sniffing and stopping to look around. However, as soon as we make it to the halfway point, he has an adorably cute, steady little trot the whole way back home! Midnight continues to share more and more of his personality with me. He’s adorably inquisitive and loves lots of attention, praise, and pets, yet doesn’t require it at all times. If I’m busy doing something, like cleaning or working, he just goes and naps in his bed. He also does cute head tilts with his perky ears, listening to my every word while I talk to him.

11-JUL-25 - Foster - 07/11/25 18:30 Foster Note: I’ve had Midnight for the past 3 nights, and he’s such a gem! He jumped right in the backseat all on his own. He was great in the car, napping the whole ride home. After exploring the yard and house, he let me give him a bath. Then, followed me around the house a bit before making himself at home, taking a nap on his bed. Later, I invited him onto the couch but he didn’t seem interested. He still hasn’t shown any interest in getting on furniture. He’s chosen the dog bed beside my bed to sleep at night. Midnight is completely housetrained, not a single accident, and he hasn’t picked up anything besides his toys. He doesn’t seem very food motivated but he might just be overly polite with food. He gives me a look as if asking for permission. I tried commonly used release words with no luck, so I’ve started saying “yum yum” when feeding him or offering him treats. He’s met a few friends that have stopped by and is very friendly with everyone. When I sit on the floor, he comes over to give lots of kisses and rubs his head on me to ask for pets, eventually melting down to the floor and rolling over for belly rubs. He spends most of his day snoozing but also enjoys short games of fetch and loves going for walks. He gets very excited when he sees his leash and does pull for the first minute or so before slowing down to my pace. He gets hot and tired quickly, so I’ve been limiting the walks to just a block or two. He’s had no reaction to seeing and passing other dogs, though he is interested in saying hello to people. Overall, Midnight is a happy, sweet, and well-behaved gentleman, and I’m looking forward to learning more about him!

23-JUN-25 - Interact - Per volunteer: 06/20/25: Midnightwas easy to leash, walking with a mild pull to the yard. He explored the yard; then chose a toy to carry with him while out. He would chase other toys, come back to drop them and pick up his chosen favorite. He carried it around when out; yet would let me reach down and he would drop it in my hand gently. He wasn’t interested in treats; while enjoying getting pets. He would lean on me when I knelt down to stand there calmly as I pet him. We cut our time short due to a thunderstorm coming. At the sound of very loud thunder, he went to sit at the gate with his toy. He was easily leashed and walked close going back to his kennel. He entered easily to be unleashed.

18-JUN-25 - Interact - 06/18/25 16:10 Midnight met us at the kennel door with a loose body posture and was easy to leash. He was easy to walk with some push/pull, but made it to the play yard with no issues. In the yard he had a loose posture and was playful, received pets happily and bounced around the yard. He was excited during leashing to leave the yard and was jumping toward the leash, but once leashed settled down and was returned to the kennel with some pulling. He was easy to unleash once back in the kennel. -GB/LB

01-JUN-25 - Interact - 05/30/25 Per volunteer: Midnight was sitting quietly as I approached, he took a treat gently. He was easily leashed. He walked with a loose body posture and he had a moderate pull. He did not react to the neighboring dogs as we past them. He took his time walking to the play yard, sniffing and relieving himself. Once in the play yard he explored on his own. He enjoys playing with stuffed toys. He allowed petting on his flank and chest area. Upon our leave, Midnight picked up a stuffed toy and walked with it in his mouth. He easily walked into his kennel. As I attempted to remove the slip lead, he turned his head toward my hand with his mouth slightly open so a slip to clip was used as a precaution.

10-MAY-25 - Foster - 05/10/25 12:25 Foster Note: Midnight is a sweet older boy. He really liked going on walks and sniffing around when we first got him. He was very interested in exploring around outside. When we got him it was a bit of a jump into the car; however, he got very cozy, very quick. He even started rolling on the backseat, which was very adorable. He’s very receptive to new individuals. He enjoys car rides and loves to nap. He occasionally looked out the window, but he was a sleepy boy. He does get overheated quickly, so we made sure we had water on hand and we sat in the car to cool him down whenever we were outside. Short shady walks are preferable to take him rather than going out for too long. He does pant a lot and he gets very hot. Also, he is not a big fan of treats, so there’s no bribing him, he enjoys his freedom of choice. we learned does not like stairs. I do think that he has the capability to climb; however, he refused to walk up the stairs to my apartment but allowed to be carried. He loves to give kisses and is a very gentle laid back boy. Midnight would thrive in a slowed paced environment.
